Puzzle
Assemblages:
I started using
puzzle pieces in my art in 04, and up until summer of 06 I hadn't formed a
cohesive body of work with this medium. Summer
of 05 I began taking photographs of a model with puzzle pieces glued to
him with whey powder, by the Fall the photographs were part of a series
of photographs combined with puzzle mixed media assemblages. Aside
from the photographs, I have used puzzle pieces to form masks onto
various boards and found metal as well as stand alone
sculpture.
Mixed
Media Works:
For
the most part all of my mixed media pieces have 2 major themes going
on. I like using my photography on a "canvas" of scrap
material or some other found object. I use
laminated
photographs that are on
1/4" MDF so I can
mount them directly onto whatever surface I want. This way the
picture is protected on the backside during mounting and protected
against being touched or scratched on the front. No more
glass. No more ugly frames.
The
scrap I get from all around Vermont. I get it driving on the road
and picking up refuse or intentionally going to buildings and
farms and asking to check out any scrap laying around.
Shiny and new isn't what my art is all about. I
like the challenge of using found objects and integrating them
into my art. I don't have a magic formula for how to assemble
anything...each piece requires me to figure it out. I have had no
training in building anything, I learn something new each time I
work. My goals and visions are always miles ahead of me.
Photography:
The
majority of my photography has been scenes in nature and around
industrial areas. I am drawn to abandoned buildings and
homes. Things that are dilapidated
or rusty and no longer useful to anyone. Honestly, my
photography is used more as an accompaniment to the assemblage
than anything else, I am bored by traditional photography, how it
looks, how it is presented and I am not trying to be the next
Ansel Adams by any stretch.
On my photo gallery page you will notice a block of
pictures, I think of it more now as a portfolio for galleries or
viewers interested in commissioned assemblages. I no longer
sell stand alone photographs. Lucky you if you bought a
limited edition print at some point...it is even more rare.
Metal
Art (a.k.a. the RR Plates)
Limited
Edition Clock Collection of 100
I
have yet to tire of these things. They are beautiful all on
their own, rusted, some with globs of tar on them...some cracked or
torn. I'm sure people think I love railroads but I don't, mostly I
like all the scrap I find around them. I don't work on the plates
because they are railroad plates ~ they are just cool little
canvases that challenge me to make unique art with. Anything that
is discarded and useless inspires me. I'm not interested in
buying new materials that everyone else uses if I can help it. I'm
not an environmentalist; this isn't about me trying to save the planet by not
buying more stuff. (I have way more fun finding the stuff to make
art with than I could ever have if you gave me a wad of bills and told
me to buy art materials in a store) All of my art is really just me expressing
myself. I have anger, fear, joy, pain and many other emotions all
whirling around inside of me and making art is an outlet for me. My
newest works on plates include Limited Edition Clocks of 100 which have
found objects as well as acrylic design as the backdrop for the clock
hands. Click here
